Mitral stenosis together with a giant cell myocarditis limited to the left atrium.

چکیده
A case is described in which mitral stenosis was associated with a giant cell myocarditis; the latter lesion was, however, localized to the left atrium. A quite high proportion of reported cases of giant cell myocarditis have occurred in association with rheumatic heart disease. The nature of this relationship is discussed and it is concluded that, in such cases, the giant cell reaction may represent an unusual myocardial response to rheumatic fever.

The Giant " A " Wave of the Left Atrial
IN an exploration of the left atrium via an atrial septal defect during a recent cardiac catheterization in this laboratory, the catheter tip entered the left atrial appendage. An exaggerated "a" wave observed in the pressure contour from the left atrial appendage was striking and exceeded in amplitude the "a" wave from the left atrium proper. Following a similar observation shortly thereafter ...
متن کاملGiant-Cell Myocarditis: A Rare Cause of Rapidly Evolved Stenosis of the Mitral Valve
M itral valve stenosis of origin other than rheumatic fever is a rare entity. Giant-cell myocarditis is an extremely rare, with poor prognosis, probably autoimmune, granulomatous disease of the heart. Progressive congestive heart failure, intraventricular conduction defects and ventricular arrhythmias, which in many cases can be fatal, are the usual manifestations of this disease. On the contra...
متن کاملThrombosed giant left atrium mimicking a mediastinal tumor.
A patient with rheumatic heart disease, mitral stenosis, and mitral insufficiency is described. The thrombosed giant left atrium paralyzed the left vocal cord and completely obstructed the bronchi to the middle and lower lobes of the right lung. The giant left atrium mimicked a mediastinal tumor on the chest x-ray film.
متن کاملGiant left atrium associated with massive thrombus formation
Giant left atrium is a condition characterized by huge enlargement of the left atrium with a diameter exceeding 65mm. It is most commonly associated with long standing rheumatic mitral valve disease. We present a 45-year-old female patient with rheumatic mitral stenosis associated with giant left atrium occupied by an 11 × 10 × 5 cm thrombus weighing 500 gms. The patient underwent successful mi...
متن کاملA Giant Left Atrium in Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis
Enlargement of left atrium (LA) is not infrequently observed in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis. We recently met a patient who had a giant LA associated with severe mitral stenosis. The right ventricle had almost collapsed due to compression by the LA. Mitral valve surgery was performed for mitral stenosis and the postoperative course was uneventful. Thus, we suggest that clinicians sho...
